The A340 is a long range wide body aircraft developed by Airbus. The development of the aircraft started in the late 1970’s as a stretch of the A300 and it uses the same fuselage cross section. The formal launch was inJanuary 1986 with its sister aircraft the two engined A330. The prototype flew on 21st October 1991 with the first delivery to Lufthansa on 2nd February 1993. The A340-600 is a stretched version of the aircraft with largerwings and engines and was designed to replace the Boeing 747 being capable of carrying 379 passengers in a three class cabin over 13,900nm. The -600 made its maiden flight on 23rd April 2001 with entry into servicewith Virgin Atlantic in August 2002.
