Profiles and Logos

The Avro Shackleton was a development of the Avro Lincoln, itself a derivative of the Avro Lancaster WW2 bomber. The aircraft intially entered service as a Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA).

The Airborne Early Warning (AEW) aircraft was produced from modified MR2 Shackleton aircraft as a stop gap measure when the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm Fairey Gannets were withdrawn in 1972. 12 aircraft were modified for use in the role, the aircraft werenamed after characters in the Magic Roundabout and The Herbs TV series. It was initially intended to operate the aircraft in the role until replaced by the Nimrod AEW3, however this aircraft was cancelled after a difficult development with the aircraft eventually being replaced by the Boeing E-3 Sentry with the last Shackleton being with drawn in 1991.
